Our History
Trinity Lutheran Church’s Story
The story of Trinity Lutheran Church is one of challenge, growth, and blessing. It owes what success it enjoys to God who renews and sustains His people through the Gospel message of Jesus’ life, death, and resurrection.
Initial efforts began in 1930, but it was not until 1938 that the nucleus of Trinity was formed. God’s timing was perfect due to the growth happening through the Shasta Dam project.
The congregation first met in the Episcopal Church building on Court Street. Their first purchased facility was the now Seventh Day Adventist Church building at 1550 Chestnut Street. Congregants met there from August 1939 until construction of the present facility, 14 acres on Hilltop, was completed in 1960.
In 1962, an after school program was launched and quickly expanded into a Christian day school. A school wing of four classrooms and a gymnasium were added to the property in 1977. The church and school experienced tremendous growth over the coming years and was dutifully served by professional church workers, pastors and teachers. The school served students from pre-school to eighth grade and was fully staffed until 1995 when the day school closed under financial difficulties. The pre-school remained open and continues to serve local families to this day.
In the early part of the millennium, the school briefly reopened to include Kindergarten and 1st Grade curricula. The following years, the Church experienced a time of prayer and discernment in their mission and ministry focus. Over time, Staff determined they could best serve their clients by focusing on Pre-School and After School Care programs.
The 2000s were marked as a time of growth, transition and reconciliation among all at Trinity. Jesus' love and forgiveness renewed the community during a time of struggle and were able to find reconciliation with one another under the Spirit’s care in Word and Sacrament. Today, Trinity is made up of over 200 families.
While we may be known as the Lutheran church on Hilltop, we want you to know that we are forgiven sinners learning what it means to live each day to the glory and honor of God. As I think about this church I see it as people gathered by Jesus Christ and growing in faith, hope, and love.
Come, meet us on the Hilltop.
